I would first of all like to say that the film is dedicated to the memory of original Top Gun (1986) director Tony Scott. Just before Tony died, he had been developing his own version of a sequel. I have to say how worried I was about this film but I was surprised at just how much I enjoyed it. I do think that this is a film to see on the big screen really to fully appreciate the flight scenes as they were really incredible. There is no other word but jaw-dropping. I found myself holding onto the edge of my chair throughout. There were times in the film that did make me chuckle and laugh. I enjoyed seeing Jennifer Connelly even though I thought she had a very underwritten part. Tom Cruise looks no different and how he could act in a film like this at his age I really don’t know. Whilst this film was still on theatrical release, Tom Cruise celebrated his 60th birthday. While filming Miles Teller grew ill and broke out in head-to-toe hives after a flight. He took a trip to the doctors and they revealed the actor had suffered an allergic reaction from the presence of jet fuel in his bloodstream. Just some of the themes that run throughout the film are heroism, loyalty, nostalgia and also the learning of working together. Even though this film is over 2 hours I did not notice the time go. Not once did I look at my watch.
