Based on a 2013 novel by David Gilbert. I just want to start by saying I do think it is Imelda Staunton who steals the show. It was the scenes she was in that I found the most moving and powerful. In my opinion she should be nominated for a Bafta Award. I do think that this is Bill Nighy’s strongest performance for a long time and I would also like to see him get a Bafta Nomination. Fantastic cast list with the likes of Bill Nighy, George MacKay and Johnny Flynn. I also thought Noah Jupe gave an outstanding performance. Wonderful script written by Sarah Polley. Her last screenplay was for Women Talking (2022). I did find the storyline to be very slow at the beginning but it gradually got better as the film progressed. A very intense and emotional drama. You could almost call this an indie film. This is director Pablo Trapero’s first English-language film. Film critic Mark Kermode has commented that “this film is about the legacy of parents and children growing up in the shadow of parents”.
