THE NEW BOY

Review: This takes place in 1940s Australia, a 9-year-old Aboriginal boy is delivered in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun. She is faced with a choice between the traditions of her faith and the truth embodied in the boy.
Director: Warwick Thornton
Actors: Aswan Reid, Cate Blanchett, Deborah Mailman and Wayne Blair
Year: 2023
Genre: Drama, Fantasy and History
Conclusion: 3/5
A very unusual film. Fantastic performances from Cate Blanchett and newcomer Aswan Reid. There was one scene that I did find profoundly moving. It was Cate Blanchett’s involvement that turned Warwick Thornton’s original script, written nearly two decades ago into the film it became. The three most important themes that are present are identity, faith and spirituality.
