The special effects in this are incredible. I also love the musical score by composer John Williams. We see a second collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss, the first one was Jaws (1975). Apparently, NASA is said to have sent a twenty-page letter to Steven Spielberg telling him that releasing the film would be dangerous. Steve McQueen was offered the role of Roy Neary although turned the role down because he said he wasn’t able to cry on film. At the Academy Awards in 1978 this won 1 Oscar for Best Cinematography although a Special Achievement Award was given to Frank E. Warner for Sound Effects Editing. At the Bafta Awards in 1979 this won for Best Production Design/Art Direction.
