An excellent film which is handled very sensitively. This is thanks to such a brilliant script and also the two main actors that carry the film. Two terrific performances from Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. I actually thought that they weren’t acting at all but were the actual popes themselves. There is a scene in which Anthony Hopkins is playing the piano. It was actually Hopkins playing and he is also an accomplished pianist. To prepare for his role Jonathan Pryce watched a lot of YouTube footage of Pope Francis. It was Netflix who recreated Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. They did it in under 10 weeks after the Vatican denied them access to film the Two Popes. Just some of the important themes that occur in this film are guilt and forgiveness.
Well I can’t believe they built another Sistine Chapel. You’ll be telling me it isn’t Buckingham Palace in The Crown next…
