EAST IS EAST
Review: Set in the 1970’s England, George Khan is a proud Pakistani and chip shop owner. He is finding it an uphill struggle to get his family to conform to traditional Pakistani values.
Director: Damien O’Donnell
Actors: Om Puri, Linda Bassett, Jordan Routledge, Ruth Jones and Lesley Nicol
Year: 1999
Genre: Comedy and Drama
Conclusion: 3/5
A sweet, charming and refreshing film. All of the actors do a terrific job. It is directed by Damien O’Donnell who did one of my favourite films called Inside I’m Daning (2004). This film was supposedly banned in Egypt. At the time this was a popular stage production and most of the actors reprised their roles for the film. According to the BBFC Website this passed ’15’ for strong language, violence and sexual references. At the Bafta Awards in 2000 it won the Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film.
