Great Expectations

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

Review: Pip is a little orphaned boy. He gets to grow up to be a gentleman and gets help from a mysterious benefactor.
Director: David Lean
Actors: John Mills, Tony Wager and Valerie Hobson
Year: 1946
Genre: Drama, Romance and Classics
Conclusion: 5/5
This film has been remade several times and I still think that this is my favorite adaptation of them all. David Lean is a fantastic director who has made several film classics. The lady in this, Miss Havisham really scared me. It is very dark and quite scary. At the Academy Awards in 1948 this won 2 Oscars. They were for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White and also for Best Cinematography, Black and White. This is listed in Barry Norman’s top 100 favorite favorite films and also his top 50 Greatest British Films that was published in the Radio Times. A film critic wrote “The graveyard scene is still a shocker, the details are still astonishingly well assembled, and the performances are wonderful”.
