I just thought I would start off by saying that the directors describe this, as an action film about empathy. My only real reservation was that I did find it far too long standing in at 2h 19m. Excellent performances, especially from Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan. Apparently, the two directors got in touch with Daniel Radcliffe to appear in the film, but due to scheduling conflicts, he turned it down. Also, Awkwafina was originally in the running to play Joy before dropping out due to scheduling conflicts. You can see this film on many different levels. When watching this at the time I found it to be very superficial but thinking about it after, the film on another level has quite a deep meaning to it. When I say it has a deep meaning, for example, this is a story about mothers and daughters (not knowing how to relate to each other), dreams and disappointments, coming out and coming of age, understanding the different between hobbies and professions. The main theme is to choose kindness, especially when life is tough. Even though there were all these underlying themes, I did not feel at all moved by the film and I never felt totally engaged with it. At the Golden Globe Awards in 2023 this won Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture (Ke Huy Quan) and also Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Michelle Yeoh). At the Bafta Awards in 2023 this won for Best Editing. At the Academy Awards in 2023 this won seven Oscar’s. They were for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Ke Huy Quan), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Michelle Yeoh), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Jamie Lee Curtis), Best Directing, Best Film Editing, Best Picture and Best Writing (Original Screenplay).
