Review: An unemployed Mancunian whose trip to London to visit his ex takes a dark turn.
Director: Mike Leigh
Actors: David Thewlis, Lesley Sharp, Katrin Cartlidge, Claire Skinner, Peter Wight, Ewen Bremner, Susan Vidler, Gina McKee, Carolina Giammetta, Elizabeth Berrington, Robert Putt and Toby Jones
Year: 1993
Genre: Comedy and Drama
Conclusion: 4/5
David Thewlis gives an outstanding performance and makes his character a rather nasty one. Apparently, David Thewlis once said that ” The character of Johnny still haunts him to this day”. Mike Leigh has got an excellent way of making the comedy and drama come through so that they are well balanced and work together. Mike Leigh and David Thewlis both worked on the script together. It is not an enjoyable or particularly nice film to watch. I think it is a film that will haunt me forever. This is one of the best English cult movies of all time. At the Cannes Film Festival in 1993 this won two awards Best Actor (David Thewlis) and also for Best Director (Mike Leigh).
