An adaptation of a 2016 novel by Paulette Jiles. I think this is a film that has divided a lot of people but I found this a really enjoyable and entertaining drama. A lot of reviews I have read critics have said that the first half was far too slow and the film is far too long. I have to say that I disagree with this comment and didn’t find the time drag at all. This is the second time that Paul Greengrass has directed Tom Hanks. The first film was Captain Phillips (2013). I don’t think I have watched a Paul Greengrass film yet which I haven’t enjoyed. He always puts so much care and attention into his films. I thought that Helena Zengel stole the film and thought she was fantastic. When Helena Zengel was cast for the role she had never heard of Tom Hanks. Watching this I also got the sense that I was watching the film through Tom Hanks’ and also Helena Zengel’s eyes. I also enjoyed the musical score by composer James Newton Howard. The script was also very well written by screenwriter Luke Davies who wrote the screenplay for Lion (2016). I also think that it is a bit of a shame that this film never got a cinematic release because it deserves to be seen on the big screen.
