Conclusion: 4/5
The first feature film to be shot in Singapore that I know of. Having been to Singapore myself it was lovely to see and be reminded of all the different buildings etc. The cinematography was well choreographed which meant you could see each building clearly. Considering that most of the actors have not been in a big feature film before (apart from Awkwafina, Ocean’s Eight, 2018) I was pleasantly surprised at how good their performances were. Apparently Netflix wanted to produce the film and offered a much bigger budget but the author of the novel turned Netflix down. I have not come across the novel that this film is adapted from but the film has kept the same title. The story line is very thin but one thing that makes it work is that it is very funny and has so many pleasing elements. Here is a film that feels fresh and original. It could become the surprise hit of 2018. I hope it brings more visitors to Singapore as it is a truly fascinating city and it is worth more than a two day stop over. My two favourite buildings in Singapore are Raffles Hotel and Marina Bay Sands. These two hotels are good symbols of old and new Singapore. Apparently they have already announced that there is going to be a Crazy Rich Asians 2 film.
