Review: It is set in North Carolina at the end of the 1920’s. George Pemberton marries Serena and his timber empire becomes complicated.
Director: Susanne Bier
Actors: Bradley Cooper, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Lawrence and Toby Jones
Directed by the Danish director Susanne Bier who has recently done the film Love Is All You Need with Pierce Brosnan. Apparently if this is true this was Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence’s’ first collaboration together but because they starred along side each other in Silver Linings and American Hustle they postponed the post-production. This reminded me very much of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth play. There were a lot of comparisons in it. You couldn’t understand Bradley Cooper’s accent in the film. Whether it was just meant to be like that for the era it was portrayed in. His character was not convincing. I didn’t think it was the right role for him to play. Jennifer Lawrence’s acting was ‘First Class‘. Toby Jones is in this but not enough. You didn’t care about any of the characters. The whole film was very slow moving. The film is worth seeing just for the cinematography. You don’t really notice the music in this. Very forgettable. Darren Aronofsky was originally down to direct this but decided to step aside. One film critic wrote about this film ‘Stilted and strange, Serena probably looked great on paper. It also probably should have stayed there’.
