Year: 1972
Genre: Drama, Musical and Classics
Conclusion: 3/5
I can see why everyone loves this film but for me I am afraid it just didn’t work. Liza Minnelli is fantastic. She doesn’t stop acting for one minute, I found her a bit too much to handle and felt she was trying to hard. At the Academy Awards in 1973 it won 8 Oscars. They were Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation and for Best Sound. That same year at the Baftas it won 7 Awards. They were for Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Directioin, Best Film, Best Sound Track and Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles. The Golden Globes that same year it won 3 awards and they were for Best Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy, Best Motion Picture Actress – Musical/Comedy and Best Supporting Actor- Motion Picture. Gene Kelly was offered a part in this film but turned it down. This is on Barry Norman’s list of 100 Greatest Films of all time that he produced at the start of 2012.
