Conclusion: 4/5
The first The Souvenir (2019) film for me did feel like a stand alone film. With the second one I felt I wasn’t watching a film but something that seemed very real and true to life. The couple that play the parents seemed so real and the questions that they were asking their daughter. Apparently, Joanna Hogg wrote the script based on her real-life experiences while attending film school in London in the early ’80s. I don’t always take to Richard Ayoade but I liked his performance and he was in it just the right length of time. I loved all the performances. Look out for Joe Alwyn who has a little cameo part! The main themes that this explores are grief and loss and art and creation.
