KOLYA

Review: For a fee Louka, a former concert cellist marries a Russian woman so she can become a Czech citizen. She immediately emigrates to West Germany leaving her sickly 5-year old Kolya with Louka. There is a cultural barrier between the confirmed bachelor Louka and Kolya but when it does come down an unbreakable bond forms in its place.

Written by its lead star Zdenek Sverak and directed by his son Jan Sverak. A very uplifting film. This has two main important themes in. One is the theme of responsibility and the importance of family, the other is the political implications of the time, as the characters have to cope with the changing political landscape of post-communist Czechoslovakia.
