I love the casting in the way that Rachel Zegler is a fairly unknown actor. I was amazed with Ansel Elgort and thought he had a terrific singing voice. Watching this though I did feel that there wasn’t something quite right. This isn’t necessary bad but all the way through I found myself admiring the dancing and costumes that especially for me took away from the story. I did find it didn’t have anything of the spark that the original West Side Story (1961) had. At the Academy Awards in 2022 this won 1 Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Ariana DeBose). At the Bafta Awards in 2022 this won two awards. They were for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role (Ariana DeBose) and Best Casting. At the Golden Globe Awards in 2022 this won 3 Awards. They were for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Rachel Zegler) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (Ariana DeBose).
