Hands of the Ripper

HANDS OF THE RIPPER

Review: As a very young child Jack the Ripper’s daughter witnesses her own father kill her mother. A psychiatrist takes her into his care but the question is will he be able to stop her trail of slaughter? Director: Peter Sasdy
Actors: Eric Porter, Angharad Rees, Jane Merrow, Keith Bell, Dora Bryan, Marjorie Rhodes, Lynda Baron, Marjie Lawrence, Norman Bird, Margaret Rawlings and Barry Lowe
Year: 1971
Genre: Horror
Conclusion: 4/5
The film’s final scene is in St. Paul’s Cathedral, permission was requested, and turned down, to film on location. A replica of it was built instead. Peter Sasdy also directed Countess Dracula (1971). Apparently, there are alternative versions of Hands of the Ripper, in the UK cinema version it was cut by the BBFC to remove a closeup of a hat-pin in a woman’s eye. The cut was restored in the 1986 video and in all later releases. Film critic Mark Kermode quoted “For all the film’s shortcomings, Sadsy brings a dash of Argento-esque style to the increasing splatter, ensuring that the hands of the Ripper continue to grip audiences even today.”
