THE ZONE OF INTEREST

Review: The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Hoss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family while unseen horrors unfold in the adjoining camp.
Director: Jonathan Glazer
Actors: Christian Friedel, Sandra Huller, Johann Karthaus and Max Beck
Year: 2023
Genre: Drama, History and War
Conclusion: 4/5
Loosely adapted from a novel by Martin Amis. The one thing I do like is you don’t get any images or get the feel of what it was like inside the concentration camp. The two things I loved the most was the score by Mica Levi and also the sound design. Director Steven Spielberg has spoken out and called it the “best Holocaust movie I’ve witnessed since my own.” A disturbing and thought provoking film which bravely tackles an incredibly sensitive topic with great originality. At the Academy Awards in 2024 this won 2 Oscars. They were for Best International Feature Film and Best Sound. At the Bafta Film Awards in 2024 this won 3 awards for Outstanding British Film of the Year, Best Film Not in the English Language and Best Sound.
