Conclusion: 4/5
Adapted from a 2018 novel by Canadian writer Miriam Toews. This does feel very much like a stage play. Claire Foy and Jessie Buckley give fantastic performances. Also, this film features a very strong performance from Ben Whishaw. Film critic Mark Kermode stated that “It shows that the community are battling with life and death, matters of gender, matters of self determination and religion.” I very much enjoyed the musical score. At the Academy Awards in 2023 this won one Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
