Fitzcarraldo was inspired by the true life story of a 19th Century Peruvian rubber baron who transported a steamship over two rivers in the Amazon. Once the filming had wrapped, the ship was left in the forest, where it remains to this day. While Werner Herzog was making this film he famously quoted “I live my life, I end my life with this project”. At the Cannes Film Festival in 1982 Werner Herzog won for Best Director.
