The Great Dictator

THE GREAT DICTATOR

Review: A Jewish barber spends years in an army hospital recovering from his wounds, unaware that there is a striking resemblance to him and a ruthless dictator.
Director: Charles Chaplin
Actors: Charles Chaplin, Paulette Goddard, Jack Oakie, Reginald Gardiner, Henry Daniell, Billy Gilbert, Grace Hayle, Carter DeHaven, Maurice Moscovitch, Emma Dunn, Bernard Gorcey, Chester Conklin, Hank Mann, Eddie Gribbon and Rudolph Anders
Year: 1940
Genre: Comedy, Drama and War
Conclusion: 4/5
I think this was a very brave film for Charles Chaplin to make especially at the time. At the time of release Adolf Hitler banned the film in Germany and in all countries occupied by the Nazis. Decades after it was reported that when Hitler watched this film, he didn’t see the joke, but he got the point. This was financed by Sir Charles Chaplin and out of all his films it was this movie that was his biggest box-office hit. This is Charles Chaplin’s first dialogue feature. I do think that this features some of his greatest comic moments. I think that the one thing that will be remembered in this film is the very last scene with him giving a speech.
