DEAD RINGERS

Review: A chilling story of identical twin gynaecologists – suave Elliot and sensitive Beverly. Elliot and Beverly descend into a whirlpool of sexual confusion, drugs, and madness when a new patient arrives named Claire Niveau.
Director: David Cronenberg
Actors: Jeremy Irons, Genevieve Bujold, Heidi von Palleske, Barbara Gordon, Shirley Douglas, Stephen Lack, Denis Akiyama and Dee McCafferty
Year: 1988
Genre: Drama, Horror and Thriller
Conclusion: 4/5
This movie is based on two real life twins, Stewart and Cyril Marcus. Fantastic performance from Jeremy Irons. I love the musical score by Howard Shaw. The special effects are incredible. Apparently, Robert De Niro turned down the Mantle twin’s roles because he felt uncomfortable playing a gynaecologist. I did find this a really hard and disturbing film to watch. Film critic Mark Kermode says: “It’s not the visual effects that dazzle, the real magic is in the performances. The result is overwhelming, at times horrifying, but mostly heart-breaking.”
