This is a film that was undeterred by the outbreak of the Second World War. Actress Vivien Leigh was originally cast in the role of the Princess, but had to drop out as she won the part of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939).” The late film critic Philip French said of this film “Among the world’s greatest fantasy movies”. At the Academy Awards in 1941 this won 3 Oscars. They were for Best Cinematography – Color, Best Art Direction – Color and also Best Effects – Special Effects.
