Conclusion: 4/5
The original title is Angst essen Seele auf. This film only took 14 days to film. I found that Brigitte Mira and El Hedi ben Salem so convincing that I forgot they were acting. Themes in this include exclusion, racism and loneliness. Film critic Mark Kermode quotes “Shot in a hurry “Fear Eats the Soul” was a very personal project for the director who casts himself as an unflattering, uncredited cameo.” “To this day, it remains one of Fassbinder’s celebrated works.” “A film that seems more relevant today than it did in 1974”.
