The original title to this film is ‘Nuovo Cinema Paradiso‘. One of the greatest Italian films ever to be made. At the end of 1956 this is the country that had the largest network of cinemas in the whole of Europe, with the total of 17,000. When this film came out the Italian audience didn’t like it very much so they then re-edited it. There are several versions to this. I believe the first version was 155 mins – released in November 1988, second 124 mins – released May 1989 and then the extended version of 173 mins. At the Academy Awards in 1990 this won one Oscar and that was for Best Foreign Language Film. At the Golden Globe Awards the same year it also won the Best Foreign Language Film. At the Bafta Awards in 1991 it managed to win 5 Awards. They were for Best Actor (Philippe Noiret), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Salvatore Cascio), Best Film not in the English Langauge, Best Original Film Score and for Best Screenplay – Original. At the Cannes Film Festival in 1989 Giuseppe Tornatore won the Grand Prize of the Jury Award. One film critic wrote ‘It looks lovely and is full of classic. memorable moments, including a tear-jerking finale’.
