Joseph Losey has done a good job directing this film and has handled it with great insight. He has keenly studied the British class system since being exiled from Hollywood in 1951 during the communist witch-hunt. Both Sarah Miles and Wendy Craig do a fantastic job. Vanessa Redgrave was originally cast but had to drop out due to her being pregnant with her daughter Natasha Richardson. Wendy Craig replaced her. The most famous quote in this is by Hugo Barrett when he says “I’ll tell you what I am. I’m a gentleman’s gentleman, and your’re no bloody gentleman!”. In 1963 the film was originally classified X for cinema release (meaning no admission to persons under 16) In 1989 it was then subsequently classified 15 for video release. The cinema re-release is rated 12A for moderate language, sex references and nudity. The late Barry Norman produced a list in 2013 in The Radio Times of the 50 Greatest British Films and this was in the list. At the Bafta Awards in 1964 this won 3 awards. They were for Best British Actor (Dirk Bogarde), Best British Cinematography (B/W), Most Promising Newcomer to Leading Film Roles (James Fox).
